Pilates

Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early half of the 20th century. Over time, its popularity has increased and subtle changes have been made to his original method as biomechanical understanding has grown.

Pilates is taught in either of two ways. The first employs a mat with limited props. In these classes, abdominal, upper back and hip strength is exercised. Anne Bishop and Ava Motter also teach Privates, Duets and Trios using equipment such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Chair and other equipment to increase the challenge of the exercises or help assist with achieving proper alignment. The equipment adds weight in the form of spring tensions and instability with ropes and pulleys. When using equipment, the arms, shoulders, neck, hips, knees and ankles can be targeted specifically by using weights and correct alignment.

Ann and Ava offer Petaluma's Only Pre-Post Natal Pilates Program.

Due to Pilates’ innate versatility, it can be beneficial for both the de-conditioned body and elite athlete. Anne and Ava have experience teaching a wide range of clients. They include those who are rehabilitating from surgery and illness, actively involved in a variety of sports (swimming, horseback riding, golf, soccer), and leaders in business and the community.

This class builds on fundamentals in pilates, focusing on the flowing progression of basic mat work. As the body becomes attuned to the deep work of the abdominal core, there is a noticeable increase in strength, tone and flexibility.

Prerequisite: knowledge of fundamentals in pilates mat.
